What is digital converting?
Digital converting is a process in which a focused laser beam is directed to cut, kiss-cut, score perforate, score, or etch patterns into materials in accordance with the specifications of a vector file. High processing speeds can be accomplished as a result of optimizing the pattern’s cutting path. Camera systems are used to identify a material’s registration marks, which are then communicated to the control software in order to ensure pattern accuracy. The digital converting process is typically performed on a moving web or while a material is stationary. This technology allows for the processing of materials in systems that operate in either an indexing or continuous on-the-fly format.

This non-contact laser process eliminates the need for hard tooling or dies and allows for multiple processes to be performed in the same work area. The result is a fast, clean, cost-effective production solution which maintains an exceptional standard of quality. Digital converting is especially ideal for applications with feature locations, tolerances, size, or material characteristics that would typically be difficult or impossible to process using a traditional die.

LasX utilizes digital converting technology in two ways: through our custom built laser processing systems, and through our contract service teams. So whether you’re looking to design an entire system, integrate laser processing machines into existing production lines, or contract a short run at our facility, our dedicated team of experts will partner with you to develop a solution that suits your individual needs. LaserSharp® digital converting systems and services cater to following markets:

  • Graphic Arts
  • Precision Medical
  • Flexible Packaging
  • Electronics & Industrial

Evolve Past Traditional Die-Cutting

Eliminate the design constraints, costs, and maintenance of mechanical die-cutting systems and discover how high-speed, precision digital converting can add value and efficiency to your production lines. LaserSharp® systems provide the adaptability to process both simple patterns and intricate, complex shapes at the same station with ease. Enjoy the freedom of unlimited cutting paths with no shape or tolerance restraints.

Because the process is entirely digital, pattern changes are simple and only require the editing of drawing files. Incorporate last minute design changes on the production floor without incurring additional delays or costs. There is no need to purchase or store dies. This technology eliminates the downtime of machine setup and pattern changeovers associated with traditional mechanical die-cutting systems. Move beyond traditional die-cutting and experience the speed, flexibility, and unparalleled accuracy of LaserSharp® technology.

Precision LaserSharp® Digital Converting Equipment

A fully digital workflow yields increases in production efficiency and accuracy. Our LightGuide software and patented controls constantly adjust laser power output in response to web speed and movement, ensuring accurate cutting, scoring, kiss-cutting, etching, and perforating. The ability to perform all of these processes in the same area eliminates the concern for realignment during a progressive mechanical die-cutting process. With digital laser converting, extremely tight tolerances in the range of 50 µm (0.002 inches) are achievable. A beam motion system enables LaserSharp® systems to process materials at high speeds with the use of 100-2500 watt lasers.

Additionally, maintenance costs are markedly reduced because of the non-contact nature of LaserSharp® laser cutting systems. Modules can easily be integrated into new roll or sheet-fed systems or can be retrofitted to existing systems currently on your production floor.
Advantages of LaserSharp® digital converting systems include:

  • Precise part registration and pattern processing
  • Process on-the-fly while web is in motion
  • Ability to process a variety of materials
  • Instantaneous order changes
  • Unparalleled accuracy and precision
