Laser Etching

Use laser etching to add functional or decorative details to papers, plastics, and acrylics.

Laser etching is very similar to laser ablation or laser scoring: the laser cuts into a homogenous material to partially remove layers at a specific depth (without completely penetrating all the way through) in order to create a three-dimensional or design in the substrate. Laser etching is distinguished from laser scoring and ablating mainly because:

• In contrast to the generally single straight line of a laser score, laser etching is used for processing larger patterns or areas of the surface of a material.
• Laser ablation generally removes the top layer of two materials that have been bonded together in layers: conductive coatings on top of polymer films, for example. Laser etching generally processes the top surface of a single homogeneous material.

Laser etching can be combined with other laser processes for a complete production solution.

Common Uses

Electronics/Industrial

• Laser etching can replace chemical etching for the production of electronic components and circuits, eliminating expensive and hazardous chemicals from your manufacturing shop floor.
• Another common application is to laser etch product identification such as company or product name and part or serial numbers into plastic or acrylic components.

Stencils

• Laser etching can be used to add part information onto each stencil for brand identity or to simplify inventory tracking eliminating the need to print on the stencil.
• Laser etch instructions for stencil use directly onto each stencil to facilitate a user-friendly consumer experience with the product.

Flexible Packaging

• Laser etching can be used to add a brand name, serial number, or expiration date to flexible packaging.
• Lasers also present the unique opportunity to add embedded security features into flexible films. In this instance, the laser etched pattern is created within the layers of the film itself, not on the surface, so it cannot be tampered with.

Graphic Arts

• Laser etching can add dimension and a new design element to printed paper pieces.
• Depending on the paper composition, laser etching can reveal a new paper color or texture once the top layer is removed, creating a new look without the need for extra printed elements.
