Flexible Packaging

LasX builds laser converting systems for flexible packaging converters, and runs contract laser processing for brands and converters who need the features before they need the machine.

Applications

What LasX equipment does in Flexible Packaging

Holographic stand-up pouch opened along its laser-scored easy-open tear line
Scoring

Easy-open scoring on pouches

Laser scoring through the outer layer, barrier intact, so the pack opens where the design says — with no hard tooling to change.

Perforating

Micro-perforation for fresh produce

Hole size and hole count set the film's oxygen and CO₂ transmission, so the pattern is sized to the produce's respiration rate — and changes with the file, not the tooling.

Perforating

50 µm micro-perforation in film

Micro-holes down to 50 µm in packaging film for modified-atmosphere packs. The pattern is a file, so it changes without a tooling change.

Scoring

Scoring and perforating on the converting line

Easy-open scores, micro-perforation and registered features in flexible packaging film, run roll-to-roll at production speed.

Perforating

Controlled venting

Venting patterns for microwave-ready packs, placed where the pack needs to release steam and nowhere else.

Why laser, in this market

01

Atmospheric control for shelf life and quality

Tunable laser micro-perforation dials oxygen and CO₂ transmission precisely — less spoilage and fewer returns, fresher product and appearance, and pack performance that holds across lines and seasons. Verified inline with µVerify™.

02

Easy-open and convenience without added materials

Micron-level laser scoring, tear initiation, and peel-reseal that preserve the barrier where it matters, improve openability, enable reclose, and support tamper evidence — with no hard tooling to change.

03

On-demand, inkless variable data and embellishment

Permanent, high-contrast laser coding for date, lot, and ingredients; serialized or covert marks for brand protection; large-area graphics — no inks or labels, curved-surface compatible, faster changeovers, and better recyclability.

Buy the equipment

Buy the equipment

A machine and a module — FocusPro™ from a 600 mm mid-web to 1,800 mm with up to eight modules and web speeds up to 500 m/min, and Scoreline™ for easy-open scoring on a pouch-making machine you already run. All built on the LaserSharp® module, standalone or integrated into the line you already have.

  • Zero tooling cost and zero tooling lead time
  • Changeover in software, not setup
  • Features mechanical tooling cannot produce at all
Have us make the parts

Have FlexPak make the parts

Flexible packaging contract work runs at FlexPak Services, the LasX sister company, on LasX equipment. Prototype quantities through production volume, while you validate the feature or build the business case for your own line. Most LasX packaging machines started as a FlexPak job. PrimePeel® and PrimeVent® are FlexPak's registered packaging brands, and PrimeTear™ is FlexPak's patent-pending easy-open scoring process.

  • Prove market demand before committing capital
  • Bridge production while a machine is being built
  • Handle overflow and short-run SKUs
  • Transfer the proven parameters to your own machine when the volume is there

Where you land

One machine for the web, one module for the pouch line you already run.

The configuration is set by what you run — web width, module count, laser power, and automation — not by a list price. Start from the features you need.

If a machine does not fit your project yet, contract manufacturing probably does.

A flexible packaging converter's problem is rarely the laser. It is whether the laser does something useful to a specific multi-layer structure at a speed that pays.

Want to see it on your material? Send a sample and we will run it in the lab and send the footage back.

Questions we get asked

Will laser processing affect seal integrity?

It depends entirely on the structure and the feature. Score depth relative to the sealant layer is the controlling variable. A lab trial answers that definitively and a specification sheet does not. Send the film.

How does this compare to mechanical perforation?

Mechanical perforation is limited by pin geometry and wears with use. Laser perforation holds hole size and pattern digitally, changes pattern without a tooling change, and can produce hole sizes and densities that pins cannot.

The fastest way to find out is to send us the material.

Trials in the PhotonX lab come back as processed samples and a written report — not a proposal.
